Canterbury's acclaimed new Roman Museum has been
specially constructed underground in the
excavated
Roman levels below the Longmarket Shopping Center.

The Roman Museum
containing a wonderful mosaic pavement that
was found after the war. The new museum was
built as part of the
development here in 1991, it replaced a slightly more basic display
of what had been found. The pavement is now behind shiny (not matt)
glass and this makes
it harder to see.

The columns here are not roman, they are just
the idea of the
architect. The Roman Pavement is about 6 feet (two meters) below
the
current street level.
The Museum is worth a visit. If you're a local go in the
off season, it's
only 25p per person. Beware that the museum is closed on Sundays
from
November to June.
